About LHLDC
Welcome to The Lighthouse Learning & Development Centre
Founded by our Executive Director, Serena Thompson, The Lighthouse is a pioneering establishment in its field. Serena’s journey into this endeavor was driven by not only her formal education or professional background, but by her deep love for her son, who has Autism.
Serena possesses a profound understanding of the critical importance of personalized learning plans for each child on the spectrum. Her son Daniel has traversed various educational settings—from private schooling to homeschooling to the public school system—each presenting its own challenges and inadequacies in meeting Daniel’s unique learning needs.
The genesis of The Lighthouse came at a pivotal moment when Serena, dissatisfied with the educational options available, decided to create a nurturing environment tailored specifically for children like Daniel. Despite exploring multiple educational avenues, none fully accommodated Daniel’s academic and social requirements. It was this realization that spurred Serena to establish The Lighthouse, York Region’s first and only private school dedicated exclusively to children with autism and neurodiverse needs.
At The Lighthouse Learning & Development Centre, we are committed to providing a supportive educational environment where each child’s individual strengths and challenges are recognized and addressed with utmost care and expertise.
We invite you to explore how our dedicated team and specialized programs can make a meaningful difference in your child’s educational journey.
At Lighthouse, we are dedicated to fostering enduring relationships rooted in a deep understanding of neurodivergent individuals, including those navigating the autism spectrum and individuals with intellectual disabilities. Our aim is to empower individuals, families, and the broader community. We endeavor to spearhead innovative research, promote education, and enhance service accessibility through collaborative engagement with the community.

Our aspiration is to provide guidance, motivation, and support for neurodivergent individuals, those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and families navigating autism spectrum disorder.
These core principles underpin our interactions with students, their families, collaborators, staff, and the community, shaping our commitment to nurturing significant relationships and spearheading impactful initiatives.

Imagine a place where every individual wholeheartedly embraces the belief stated above: where differences among humans are not only accepted but celebrated. A place where individuals are encouraged to embrace their true selves, taught to cultivate self-love, and motivated to strive for personal growth every single day.
The Lighthouse Learning and Development Centre aspires to embody “that place” for our entire community, each and every day. Learning differences are just that — differences in how individuals process information. Having a learning difference does not mean someone cannot learn; it simply means they learn in unique ways. Consider being in a room where everyone speaks a foreign language, and no one takes the time to translate or explain. Unfortunately, many diagnosed with autism experience this sense of confusion and isolation every day.
Individuals with Autism face specific barriers to learning, including challenges with auditory processing, attention, generalization, task sequencing, organization, planning, and transitions. Addressing these barriers requires modifications to support their success. However, effective modifications can only be implemented once we understand how each individual learns best. Given the unique nature of these challenges, not every person will thrive with the same approach. This underscores the critical importance of personalized learning plans tailored to each persons unique needs in their journey. Without such personalized plans, individuals with Autism may struggle to overcome their specific barriers to learning, hindering their overall growth.
