Let’s talk about tags-those tiny, useless, demonic squares of itchy doom that live in the back of every shirt, pair of pants, jacket, underwear, sock and apparently now, the human soul.

I am the mother of a 19-year-old boy with autism, significant intellectual disabilities, ADHD, anxiety, and an autoimmune disorder.  (I know, I hit the jackpot, right?). I also happen to be a Provincial Trainer in behaviour management with 14+ years’ experience in autism intervention – and yet, despite all of my professional and personal knowledge, nothing, NOTHING, has prepared me for the emotional warfare that is tags in clothing.

I ask you, clothing manufacturers:

WHY. ARE. THEY. THERE.

Seriously.  Why.   What purpose do they serve?

You’ve already done to the effort of making the shirt.  The seams are stitched.  The hems are hemmed.  And then, in a moment of pure evil, someone goes, “Wait! Let’s sew in a tiny rectangle of fire to make this child’s life a waking nightmare and drive their parent to the brink of madness.”

Genius, really.

Let me be crystal clear: tags are not optional in my house.

Tags must be removed with surgical precision before my son even lays eyes on a garment.  One brush of that scratchy little square on the back of his neck and we’ve gone from getting dressed to DEFCON 1 full-blown sensory meltdown.

It’s not a mild inconvenience.  It’s a national crisis.

Forget hurricane season – welcome to Tag Season, where shirts are launched across rooms, pants are declared “too itchy,” and I’m left holding a pair of safety scissors like I’m prepping for orthopedic surgery instead of getting my kid dressed for the day.

And don’t even get me started on how impossible it is to remove them.

You try cutting the tag off – just the tag – and somehow, you’ve left behind that evil little translucent thread that is apparently made from porcupine whiskers and betrayal.  So now you’re sitting on the floor, squinting at a shirt label with a flashlight, tweezers, and a sewing kit, wondering how your life became a low-budget episode of Grey’s Anatomy: Sensory Edition.

You know what’s even more insulting?

Some companies have figured it out.  They’ve cracked the code.  They print the info directly onto the fabric.  It’s like a miracle.

So clearly, it’s possible.

It’s just that most companies choose not to – which is baffling because removing the tag step seems like it would actually save money.  You’re telling me you choose to sew on a piece of fabric just to ensure that my day starts with a scream and ends with a pile of rejected shirts?

Here’s my humble, slightly unhinged proposal:

GET RID OF TAGS.  FOREVER.

We don’t need them.  No one sees them.  They don’t advertise anything.  They don’t add value.  They add trauma.  They are the paper cuts of the wardrobe world – tiny, invisible, but capable of ruining the entire day.

To every parent out there sitting on the floor of their laundry room, whispering curses while performing impromptu clothing surgery – I see you.

To the kids out there who feel like tags are an actual form of torture – you’re right.

And to the companies still sewing these little demons into our lives – why do you hate us?

Say it with me now: NO. MORE. TAGS.

Let’s make it a movement.  Let’s make it a revolution.  Let’s make getting dressed in the morning feel less like a hostage negotiation and more like…I don’t know…just getting dressed.

With love, scissors, and a trash can full of tags,

One Mom Who’s Ready to Burn It All Down – Starting with That Label in his Hoodie.
